The fire swirled around her. The fire engulfed the people she was trying to and save. She thrust her way threw flames, but then was knocked back against the wall with a force that would have knocked anyone out if they were a regular human. But that isn't what she is. Katelyn: a fourteen year old girl with a dream. A dream of becoming a firefighter.
Katelyn had wanted to be just like her dad ever since she went to work with him and rode on the firetruck when she was four. That was ten years ago.
Katelyn was pushed against the wall again as she tried to make it to her destination. She screamed. Why did the fire never cooperate with her? Why did it always set her back?
She still pushed on to try to retrieve her target. No matter how much she hated it, she would not quit. She loved helping, and she loved the rush of being around fire.
Katelyn saw faces in the fire. She spotted one that she knew. It seemed to form out of the fire. It was her dad. She stopped dead in her tracks. "Dad?" She asked the flames. The flames just flickered and what appeared to be her father smiled that smile when you see something nice. "Is that you?" Katelyn asked in disbelief.
Katelyn's father had died last month in a fire accident. She knew it wasn't an accident and she knew why her father was there. Her father was getting down to the spot on who wa causing all of the fires. She knew that someone had murdered him with the forces of fire. The only problem was figuring out who.
Katelyn watched her father burn in the blue and red flames as she tried to find a way to get to him. The whole path that she had to take caught on fire minutes after she saw it. She ended up getting a few burns herself, but the biggest burn she got was wathing her father die right before her eyes. Just swallowed by the flames. Engulfed by the searing heat. Gone forever.
Katelyn felt like she was at that moment in time. The time when she saw her father burning.
"Dad!" She screamed. Katelyn overturned things just to try to get to her father. "No!" She screamed as another flame engulfed him.
Katelyn was starting to cry as she tried to make it to her father. She backed up and started to run, her heavy equipment weighing her down, but still, she jumped. She landed right in front of the pile of rubbish on the side her father was on. She rushed over to him ,hoping it wassn't too late. Her father screamed as he reached out a hand for her.
A flame exploded to the left of Katelyn and she looked a little too late. The flame hit her with the same force of a semi truck. It propelled her through the air and made her now, limp body, hit the wall. She was out cold.
As her vision darkened, Katelyn saw her dad being engulfed in another flame as he dropped to his knees.
'I love you' he mouthed to her as she wasn't able to hear over the roars of the flames and the beating of her own heart.
Her vision went black.
Only moments later after her father was crisp and burnt to the bone, did one of their team mates get there in time to save Katelyn. He doused her in water from the hose and put her on his back and carried her away from that room.
Katelyn woke up minutes after they got outside into the fresh air. SHe gasped as the air hit her lungs. Fresh, clean air.
Her team mate set her down by the ambulance then checked her pulse. It was excelerated. "You need to lie down, Kate. If your heart beats any faster you are going to go into cardiac arrest." He said as she looked around. She had a face on like she wanted to cry and be mad at the same time.
A tear fell from her cheek as she processed what had just happened.
Katelyn looked away from the building as it exploded. Another tear fell from her cheek.
Katelyn came back to the present as she saw another flame go up the wall and ignited the cieling in, first, blue flames, then red flames.
Katelyn dropped to the ground as one went right across where her haed was just at. She moved on, crawling on the ground and breathing into her mask. She wasn't going to let sime fire figurine ruin her day by killing people.
Katelyn contiuned to crawl on the ground. She counted the seconds. One... Two... Three.. One.. Two.. Three.. on the next round of numbers, she got to her feet and jumped in the air. She twisted and was now spinning.
Katelyn landed on her feet on the other side of the flames as they exploded right were she was standing. She couldn't see through her mask, so she decided to take it up. It was too fogged up from her breathing. She threw it on the ground behind her. She coughed as the smoke filled air hit her lungs instead of the fresher, cleaner air that was inside the mask.
Katelyn saw the two figures she was trying to get to. It was a woman and a little toddler by her side, holing her hand. The woman was screaming for help as she saw Katelyn through the flames and the toddler was crying.
Katelyn grabbed the toddler and hoisted him on her back. She grabbed the woman and took her by the arm and started to run. How she did it was unknown. How she got through the fire to the two humans, how she could stand the smoke filled air, how she could carry both of them. All was unknown about Katelyn.
They finally reached outside, but the woman was still crying. The only problem was that she was saying things in a different language.
"What is she saying?" Katelyn asked a girl next to her. Lucky for KAtelyn she was also an old translator that joined the squad.
The woman next to her started to speak in the same language as the woman that was saved from the fire. "She said..... She is saying her baby is in the building still...." The woman next to Katelyn said to her.
"Alright, tell her to calm down and that everything's going to be okay." Katelyn told her as she walked off. The translator put her hand on Katelyn's shoulder as she walked past. "Kate... The whole building is coming down." She said to her. Katelyn just looked at her and started for the building.
She headed closer to the building as the left side of it exploded in flames and the top started to fall off. Katelyn looked up. It was going to be tricky, but if you know how to stare down the fire, then that is how you can control it. Look it in the eye and stare it down.
Katelyn went over to her firetruck and pulled an axe off of it. She got a new mask and put it around her head. She looked at the woman that was translating only moments before and looked at the building. She took her mask off her face and said, "give me three minutes. If I'm not out by then....." Katelyn said. She didn't finish. She didn't have to. The other woman nodded once. "Three minutes, Kate. That's all you get!" She yelled to her.
Katelyn looked up at the building and then back at the woman. She then put her mask on her face and cealed it.
Katelyn walked swiftly up to the building and told one of the men on the hose, "I'm going in. Give me three minutes at max." Then walked in the small whole that was blown through the wall by the explosion. Katelyn disappeared into a dark cloud of smoke.
Katelyn went through the door like whole in the side of the wall, only to be greeted by black smoke. Katelyn took her mask off so she could see clearly.
Katelyn heard an infant cry from where she stood. She headed in the dircection of the cry. The bad thing about houses and building that catch on fire is, even if you know the floor plan, it doesn't matter. By the time everything is burnt, black, or on fire, it all looks the same.
Katelyn looked up and saw a huge rafter falling towards her. She ran and tucked and rolled on the ground. The rafter came down right where she was standing and presently, now, a few inhces from where she landed.
Katelyn got to her feet and started to run. Her equipment startetd to catch on fire so she stripped herself of the air tank that was proned to explode if it got caught on fire. She let it rest on the groun and right as soon as she took it off, it exploded. She ran as she took of her fireproof jacket.
She still ran in the direction of the screams and cries. Katelyn saw more things fall in the path of her way back. She would have to find another way out.
She rushed in to a door and found a crib that was on fire. She heard cries coming form t he crib. She looked in it, sheilding her face fro mthe flames and saw a baby in the midst of the flames.
Katelyn did some quick thinking. She had a long sleeve white shirt on and she got a white drape that was on a window. She looked out the window and saw the woman that was recently in the building crying and trying to get back to the building. Katelyn had to give them a sign that she was still up here and she was alive. Katelyn tied a bunch of drapes together and made a long propelling rope. She saw the crib was jsut about all doused in fire so she reached her hands in, screaming, and grabbed what it held: the baby.
Katelyn screamed as her arms entered the fire again. Her hands and arms would need medical attention if she got out of her alive. Katelyn tied herself to the baby with the drapes and tied the other end of it to the door that was now closed to keep the fire out.
Katelyn backed up and jumped out of the window. The glass shaddered into a million pieces, cutting Katelyn's face and her arms as she jumped. She fell. She fell head first, all tied with white drapes. She closed her eyes and thrust her hands forward. There was a lader extended from the fire engine a bit farther out that was now lowering. Katelyn extended her arms and caught on to the white lader with one hand. She untied the drapes and held the baby in one hand while holding on to the white metal with the other.
She was hanging. Hanging one hundred feet above the ground. Hanging with nothing but concrete below her.
Katelyn was spotted by serveral firemen as the building exploded behind her. Not just part of the building. The whole building exploded right after she jumped.
Katelyn screamed as her arm hooked onto the white metal. She just either broke her arm, or dislocated it. Katelyn noticed her foot was on fire. She guessed another firemen saw the same thing she did. He blasted her foot with cold water that was a relief to Katelyn. Lucky for Katelyn, he didn't blast it on high, she probably would have been catapulted off of the lader if he had it on high.
Katelyn felt her arm slipping from its grip on the metal pole. The firemen weren't lowering the lader fast enough. The faster it lowered, the faster her grip left, but the slower it went, the more her shoulder would be damaged.
Katelyn saw in her pheriferal vision that the were moving a trampoline under her, but she knew that they couldn't get it exactly where she was going to fall. That was mpossible. She should know, she had to do it a couple of times with other firefighters.
The trampoline had her firetrucks number on it: 17. It also had a blue circle outlined with red. Then it had the golden number in the middle of it.
Katelyn felt her grip slip. She caught it just as soon as her grip slipped. Everyone below gasped and was taken back as she started to fall but then regained her grip.
Katelyn felt te grip start to give again under the pressure. The men were still squirting water at the flames in the building, but most of the people had their eyes on Katelyn.
Katelyn's glove became un latched as her hand started to slip out of it. Her grip finally gave. She started to fall towards the ground, face forward, facing the fast approaching cement. Katelyn saw them move the trampoline so it was under them. Luckily the lader was lowered enough so that she wouldn't bust right through it and hit the ground.
She was about forty feet above ground when she dropped. She tried to turn, but ended up doing it at the last minute. Katelyn landed on the trampoline with the baby tucked in her arms. The only bad part was that Katelyn landed on her side. On her shoulder. The shoulder that had been hangning on to the lader.
She heared something crack and she hoped it wasn't the bone or a rib or anything, but hoping it was just one of the springs on the trampoline. But that's when she remembers, that the trampolines they use didn't have springs.
She then felt the pain in her arm. She got up off the trampoline with the baby in her arms. She handed the baby to a medic with one hand. After she did that, she went around to an alley, holding her shoulder.
Katelyn put her back against the wall and kept holding her shoulder. She squeeed her eyes shut tightly and heard approaching footsteps.
"Kate!" She heard a woman call. The footsteps got louder and grew more near. It was the same woman that translated for her earlier.
"Kate, what are you-" She stopped in mid sentence as she saw Katelyn holding her shoulder, squeezing it with one hand and with her eyes shut tight.
Kate had a hard time breathing now. She was hoping it was just because of the pain, but she was prooved wrong when the woman said, "Kate.... Your bleeding..."
Katelyn opened her eyes and looked down at her shirt. It was right at her bottom rib. It must have been a broken rib. That's why she must not be able to breathe.
"I need a medic over here!" The woman said as she saw Katelyn closing her eyes and falling over.
The alley was right beside all the action. You could see Katelyn and the woman clearly as the woman raised her hands and was waving for someone to get her attention. 'I'll be right back, Kate." She said softly as she started to run as fast as she could towards the firetruck.
The woman spotted a medic and pointed to the alley were Katelyn was laying. Both, the man and the woman raced back to Katelyn. The medic pressed his fingers to the lood and felt her rib. "It's broken alright... Kate, I need you to stay with us, stay awake. Okay? just try to stay awake Kate." He told her as she started to fall over. The man quickly check her pulse.
"She's not breathing and she has no pulse. She's going into cardiac arrest." The man said as he started to pick Katelyn up. Her face started to turn pale as the man ran with her in his arms.
"Move out of the way!" The man shouted as he ran with Katelyn in his arms. Three people that were getting eqeuipment quickly moved out of the way as the man just three more people started to follow the man and woman that were with Katelyn.
"We need to get her to the ambulance!" The man told the woman. The woman nodded and started to run faster then the man. She went to the ambulance and opened the doors. She quickly turned everything on just as soon as the man got there.
"Can you drive this thing?" The man asked another man that was right beside the ambulance. The man hesitated the nodded. "Take her to the hospital. She has a broken rib, and possibly a broken arm, she is going into cardiac arrest now!" He said as he went anfd got into the passenger's side.
The other man got into the driver's side and turned the siren on. It was a rule that you had to have the engine's of the abulance's on at all times in case there's an emergancy.
Three other people got in the back with the woman and helped strap Katelyn in.
The siren kicked on and the car jerked forward. It roared down the street with its engine's ear piercing scream on high.
All the cars were smart and moved out of the way before the truck ran them over.
